Downtown Guide to Santa Monica
Fall 2007

At a time when digital rendering has made “magic” a term of industry, it’s great to know that real magic has friends in Downtown Santa Monica. As the LA Weekly puts it, “The husband and wife team of Steve Spill and Bozena Wrobel serve up an entertaining family-friendly vaudeville style show, complete with one-liners, showgirls and acts of prestidigitation that leave audience members pondering, ‘How did they do that?”

Some would say that the best trick is the continued existence of the venue itself. When it opened in September of 1998, Magicopolis was viewed by some as an experiment in wishful thinking. But the Abracadabra Theater’s stage has been busy since then, thanks to regular high-quality productions, special events, and private party bookings. What matters most is that a form of enchanting live theater has vigorous support right in the heart of our city. And after the show, shop in the lobby and buy a magic trick or two to attempt at home. Not as easy as it looks, right? Well, that’s part of the magic.
